Pott's Disease: Thoracic Vertebrae
This specimen of a tuberculous spine demonstrates almost complete destruction of T7 and T8. A mass of caseating tissue has herniated posteriorly, causing kyphotic angulation and transverse myelopathy as a result of impingement on the spinal cord at this level. The infected tissue has elevated the posterior and anterior longitudinal ligaments. Fibrocartilaginous fragments of the annular portion of the intervertebral disc remain within the area of caseous bone destruction. (Marrow and adipose tissue have been stained orange to improve contrast.)
