Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever: Synovitis, Knee
An effusion developed in the right knee joint 24 hours after the onset of rash. Synovial fluid was inflammator but gram-stain was negative. Serum IgM antibodies against Rickettsu rickettsu were elevated. Skin biopsy was consistent with rickettsiosis. Patient improved substantially with oral doxycycline (he was allergic to amoxicillin).
