Partial Tear: Achilles Tendon
In the T2-weighted sagittal image, the Achilles tendon (arrow) is partially torn horizontally just below the tibiotalar joint, and the tendon has thickened markedly just below the tear. A small amount of adipose tissue is interposed into the tear. Above that tear, the tendon is also torn vertically (short arrow) and has a high intensity signal (white). The vertical tear measures about 5 cm. Ehman RL, Berquist TH, McLeod RA. MR imaging of the musculoskeletal system: a 5-year appraisal. Radiology 1988;166:313-320.
